Creating a Presentation of The Simpsons

First you need to download the data files for this project. Before downloading, create a folder in your student folder called The Simpson Power Point Project. Click on the link below and save all the data files to newly created The Simpson Power Point Project folder.

Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 provides several standard, prebuilt themes. Find a standard theme that has a look that you like, and then modify it by changing the colors, the fonts, or the line and fill effects. You can then save it as your very own custom theme.

Open PowerPoint 2010 (Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > PowerPoint 2010).

Save the presentation with the name The Simpsons.

Choose a Prebuilt Theme

To choose a document theme, with the Design tab selected, in the Themes group choose a theme that you feel would compliment your presentation. To see all the themes available click the more arrow. As you roll over the themes with your mouse it will display how it will look on the slide. Choose one by clicking on it.

Change Theme Colors

On the Design tab, in the Themes group, click Colors, and then drag over the different color choices available.  As you scroll, your design colors will change on the slide. Choose a different color theme for your selected slide design. The colors inside the Colors button Color Theme represent the theme applied to your presentation. I choose the Waveform:

My slide now looks like this with the Waveform theme applied. Yours will look different depending on the design and color theme chosen.

Change Theme Fonts

To change the theme fonts, on the Design tab, in the Themes group, click Fonts Fonts, and then click Create New Theme Fonts.

In the Heading font and Body font boxes, select the fonts that you want to use. Select a font to your liking, I selected Comic Sans MS. 3.In the Name box, type an appropriate name for the new theme fonts, and then click Save.

You don’t need to worry about the effects and background styles at this time.

Save the Theme

Save the changes that you make to the colors and fonts of an existing theme so that you can apply it to other documents or presentations.

On the Design tab, in the Themes group, click More.

Click Save Current Theme.

In the File name box, type Simpson Presentation for the theme name , and then click Save.

Tip: The revised theme is saved as a .thmx file in the Document Themes folder on your local drive and it is automatically added to the list of custom themes on the Design tab in the Themes group.

Open The Simpson presentation you saved earlier.

When you first open PowerPoint, you will see a blank “slide” with a space for a title and a subtitle in two boxes. This slide is called the title slide.

Start by typing a title and subtitle: On the slide, click in the top text area (the title placeholder), which has a dashed border and the text Click to add title. The text disappears. In the title placeholder, type The Simpsons.

Click in the subtitle text box and they ” Created by”, press the enter key, then type “Your Name.” My slide looks like the slide below:

Navigate to your student folder and click on the simpsonfamily_fighting graphic to insert it on the title slide.

With the picture still selected you will now add a picture style. With the Picture Tools Format tab selected, in the Picture Styles section click the more button to see all the picture styles available.

Open The Simpson presentation saved earlier. Since you are just adding a slide to your presentation you will resave the presentation with the same name, The Simpsons.

To create a new slide where you can add content, click the Home tab and select the more New Slide option to see a list of all available slide options..

Select the Title and Content slide layout. Double click it to add it to your presentation.

Clicking the the bottom half of New Slide will give you different new slide options. Double click it to add it to your presentation. You should now have a slide layout that looks like this:

Click in the text box that reads “Click To Add Title” and type in the text “The Simpson’s Achievements.”

Click in the bottom text box and type the following in bullet list form. To create a new bullet, simply press the Enter key.

Change Bullet Character to a Picture

Now you are going to use a picture to replace your bullet list. The picture you will use can be found in your data files you downloaded earlier called Donut_Bullet.gif.

First select all the bullet list by dragging over it while holding down your left mouse. With the Home tab selected click the bullet button then select Bullets and Numbering.

Navigate to your The Simpson Power Point Project folder and click on the graphic call Donut_Bullet t6hen click the Add button.

Now when you return to the Picture Bullet dialog box your donut bullet should now appear. Click on it to select it then click OK to set the donut as your new bullet.

Decrease Font Size to 20

With the bullet list still selected click the decrease font size button on the Home tab until the font size box shows 20.

Remove Bullets and Align Text to the Center

Select all the bullet list on the slide by dragging over them while holding down the left mouse button.

Click the bullet icon on the Home tab once to return to the original bullet list. Click again on the bullet icon to get rid of the bullets. If you had not used a picture bullet you would only have to click once to get rid of the bullets.

Click the center align icon on the Home tab to center align the text on the slide.

Set Line Spacing to 1.5

With the bullet list still selected click the line spacing button and select 1.5.

Insert Picture, Apply Washout, Place Behind Text

Insert the simpsonbackground picture (Insert > Picture). With the picture selected on the slide apply a washout color effect to it. With the Picture Tools Format tab selected click Color then choose Washout in the Recolor section.

Add a New Title and Content Slides Grading Rubric

Title and content slide contains the title “The Simpson’s Achievements” and content contains six achievements in a bulleted list.
Bulleted list has been formatted with the donut picture bullet.

Press the enter key two more times to add two blank circles to the graphic.

To get rid of these boxes, simply press the Backspace key four times to erase them from the SmartArt graphic. Since the Simpsons did not win other awards you will erase these extra circles, returning the SmartArt graphic to its original state.

Change the Radical Cycle to a Segmented Pyramid Then to a Hierarchy Organizational Chart

With the SmartArt graphic selected on the slide, make sure you are on the SmartArt Tools Design tab. Click the more More Layouts in the layout section and select More Layouts.

At the Choose a SmartArt Graphic dialog box click the Pyramid style and then click the segmented pyramid to change the layout of your graphic.

Add 3D Polished SmartArt Style to Chart

With the graphic still selected on the slide, you will add a 3D polished style to the chart. With the SmartArt Tools Design tab selected click the more SmartArt Styles arrow.

With your chart in PowerPoint selected you will select Change Chart Type which is located on the Chart Tools Design tab.

With the chart selected on the slide click the more button on the Chart Tools Design tab in the Chart Styles section.

Modify Chart Wall by Applying Water Droplet Texture

Select the chart wall by clicking in the chart area shown below. With the Chart Tools Format tab selected Format Chart select the shape fill and select Texture then the water droplet texture.

Modify the Vertical Axis To Display Numbers 1 to 30 in Increments of 2

At the Format Axis dialog box select fixed for Minimum and set the value to 0, fixed for maximum and set the value to 30, and major unit fixed and a value of 2.

Now you will add 5 Two Content slides displaying a picture and information on each of the five main characters. Open The Simpsons presentation you saved earlier. When you have completed this activity save it with the same name The Simpsons.

With the Home tab selected click New Slide then select the Two Content Slide layout.

In the title section type the first main character Homer Simpson. In the left content area click the Add Picture icon to insert homer_large graphic into the slide area.

Navigate to your student folder and locate the homer_large graphic. Click Insert to place the graphic in the left content area.

Now click in the right content area and type in the following text, indenting as necessary using the demote and promote command in the outline pane. To demote or promote a list, in the Outline pane on the left side of the presentation click Outline.

Open The Simpson presentation. You will now insert an audio file on Homer’s and Maggie’s slide. The audio files are located under the audio_files folder in the student data folder you downloaded. Remember you are just adding to The Simpson presentation so you will save it with the same name.

Display Maggie’s slide by clicking on it in the slide view in the left pane. With the Insert tab selected click the Audio icon then select Audio from File.

Navigate to your student folder and locate the audio file called maggie_daddy. Click on it to select it then press the Insert button at the bottom of the dialog box.

Now drag the audio icon up next the the text that reads “Maggie’s first word as shown below:

Play Audio When Clicked

You do not want the audio to play unless the viewer clicks on it. To have the clip play only after you click the sound icon, click the When Clicked button. With the audio icon selected on the slide, click on the Audio Tools Playback tab. Make sure On Click is selected.

To hear the sound click, with the Slide Show tab selected click From Current Slide in the Start Slide Show section.

Click on the audio icon to hear the sound. To exit the slide show simply click the ESC key.

Display Homer Simpson’s slide. Again follow the directions above to insert the Audio File audio file. Drag this audio file below Homer’s picture.

Now you want this audio file to play when the slide loads, in other words automatically. With the audio icon selected on the slide, click on the Audio Tools Playback tab. This time selected .

Adding Comments

There are times when you want to make a note to yourself or to someone who might be working on a presentation with you. For this activity you want to place a comment on slide a and slide 4 noting that you want to add create sections there. Sections lets you organize your slides, much like you would use folders to organize your files. You can use named sections to keep track of groups of slides, or you can assign sections to co-workers to make ownership clear during collaboration.

On slide 1 add the comment “Add section named Award’s Achievements between slides 1 and 2.”

With slide 1 open in the main slide section click on the Review tab to open the Review ribbon. Click New Comment.

In the comment text box type “Add section named Award’s Achievements between slides 1 and 2.”

Click on slide 4 to make it active in the main slide section add the comment “Add section named Main Characters between slides 4 and 5.”

Normal and Slide Sorter Views

Normal view is when your slides appear to the left of the main slide as shown below:

Slide Sorter view is when all your slides appear in the viewing area.

To change views, with the View tab selected click Normal for normal view and Slide Sorter for slide sorter view.

Add and Name a Sections

In either Normal view or Slide Sorter view, right-click between the two slides where you want to add a section. There are two sections to the slide show, the awards achieved and the main characters. Right click between slice 1 and slide 2.

Rename the section Awards Achieved, right-click the Untitled Section marker, and click Rename Section. Rename this section Awards Achieved.

You section name should now appear between slides 1 and 2.

Now insert a section between slides 4 and 5 and rename it Main Characters.

Add Section Header Slides

Now you will insert section header slides, on after side 2 and one after slide 4.

In normal view click on slide one in the slide view section to make slide one the active slide.

With the home tab selected insert a new header section slide by clicking New Slide then select the Header Section slide layout.

Deleting the bottom text placeholder by clicking on it on the slide then pressing the delete key. Your slide should now have only the top placeholder.

Insert another section header slide between slides 5 and 6 that contains the text shown below and the bottom placeholder deleted.

Now that the comments have served their purpose you will want to delete them. Return to slide 1 and click on the comment. With the comment select click the delete button.

Also remove the comment found on slide 5.

Remove Section Header Slides

Now you will delete the section header slides, thought being that they break up the presentation instead of enhancing it. In Slide Sorter View click on the each of the slides (Awards and Achievements & Main Characters) then press the delete button. Here is how your presentation should now look in slide sorter view. Notice that your sections are still in place but the section header slides are deleted.

To change the look of your bullet list you will format it into two columns. Select all of the bullet list by dragging over them while holding down your left mouse. On the home tab click the columns button and select two columns from the drop down list.

Apply a Footer to all Slides But the 1st Page

Now you will place the footer “The Simpsons” on all the slides but slide 1. In normal view click on the Insert tab then select Header & Footer.

At the Header and footer dialog box place a check mark beside Footer, type in “The Simpsons” and place a check in the check box beside Don’t show on title slide. Click Apply to All.

Apply a Header to the Handouts

Now you will add a header that uses the date formula dddd, mm, dd, yyyy. Open the Header and Footer dialog box (Insert > Header & Footer) select the Notes and Handouts tab. Place a check mark by Date and time. Select the format shown below:

Now view your slide to see if the footer was added. To see how the handouts will look Choose File > Print.

Click the drop down arrow on the Full Page Slides button. In the Handouts section, select the number of slides to print on each page. Select 3 slides to view how the handouts will look 3 per page.

Now you will fix the alignment of text on your main character pages. You want to align it to the bottom of the text box so it will make the slides look more symmetrical.

With your Simpson powerpoint presentation open, go to Homer’s slide.

Select all the bulleted list by dragging over it while holding down your left mouse. With the Drawing Tools Format tab selected click the Align button then select Align Bottom.

Repeat aligning text to the bottom of each of the main character slides. On Maggie’s slide you might need to move the audio icon to line up again with the text “Maggie’s first word.”

PowerPoint 2010 comes with enhanced transitions and animations that can make awesome animated presentations.

Adding Animations

The term animation is used in PowerPoint to describe the motions that are applied to the objects on the slides, and not the slides themselves. One object or several objects on a slide can be animated.

Animations are used to capture the audience’s attention. The most popular animation choices are displayed once the Animations tab is selected on the ribbon.

So with the Animation tab selected follow the directions below:

Add Animation to the Title Slide

Click on the object — either a text box or a graphic — to be animated. On the title slide click the Simpsons title placeholder text.

Notice there are five animation groups; Entrance, Emphasis, Exit, and Motion Paths. Hover your mouse over any animation style to see the effect on the object. This allows you to see how the animation will look without applying it. Click the more button to see more animation options

For this animation select Motion Paths Shapes.

The default shape is a circle. You want to change the motion path shape to a trapezoid.

Open the animation pane by clicking on the Animation pane button on the Animation ribbon.

With the animation selected in the animation pane panel Animation Pane click the Effect Options then choose the Trapezoid.

Click on the second text box, your subtitle, on the title slide, the one containing your name. You will now apply a Loops motion path to this text. then change the motion path shape to Loop de Loop.

In the animation pane make sure the second animation is selected.

Drop down the Effect Options menu and select Loop de Loop.

To view how your slide will play in the presentation click the play button in the animation pane.

To change the order of which objects will animated first, second, etc., click on the animation you want to move then click the order arrow at the bottom of the animation pane.

Click on the Animation tab of the ribbon if it is not already visible. Click on the object on the slide that you wish to apply animation settings.

To set your timing, with your animation selected in the animation pane adjust the number of seconds by changing the number of the Duration in the timing section.

For the title slide you will leave the timing at 2 seconds for both animations.

Go to the Simpson Trivia slide with the bullet list that is displayed in two columns.

Click in the title placeholder, then add the animation Entrance Swivel.

Set the time/duration for 3 seconds.

Select the bulleted list and format it with the Split Entrance animation.

Now add the effect option for horizontal out. With the animation still selected click the Effect Options button then select Horizontal Out.

Set the timing/duration to 1 second.

Now apply animations and timing to all the rest of the slides in your presentation with animations of your choice.

Add Transitions

In order to add transitions in PowerPoint slides you will use the transitions menu.

You will now set the slide options so that each slide auto advances after 15 seconds. First click on the Transitions tab then click the more button to show a list of all transitions.

Check out the transitions by clicking on them to see how they appear when loading the slides. Choose the one you like.

You will apply this transition to all of your slides. You could apply different transitions to each slide but for this activity you will use just one transitions for all slides. Click the Apply To All button.

You can preview your transition by clicking the Preview button on the Transitions tab. A few clicks is all it takes to add a little energy and excitement to an otherwise dry presentation.

Now you will apply a breeze transition sound to the title slide. With the title slide selected click the Sound button and pick Breeze for the Sound Transition.

The Title on the Title Slide animation has been set to Motion Paths Shapes and the motion path shape is changed to a trapezoid.

Viewing Slides

Now you will complete several task that have to do with viewing your slides.

View each slide at 92%.

In Normal View with the View tab selected click the Zoom button.

Set the slide size so each slide is 12.5″ wide and 9″ high.

Click the Design tab and then click the Page Setup button to open the Page Setup dialog box.

Test Your PowerPoint Presentation by Playing the Slide Show

At any time you may want to test out your slide show. You can do this by playing the complete slide show from the beginning, or simply from the current slide forward.

Click on the Slide Show tab of the ribbon. In the Start Slide Show section at the left end of the ribbon, click on the From Beginning button. Alternatively you may simply press the F5 key on the keyboard to play the complete slide show at any time.

Since you have set the slide show to run automatically sit back and watch the slide show. You can adjust timing as you view the show, adding more time for slides that are presented too fast and subtracting time for the slides that stay on too long.

Forward Click on the Slide Show tab of the ribbon. In the Start Slide Show section at the left end of the ribbon, click on the From Current Slide button.

Using the Annotate Feature in PowerPoint

View presentation as a slide show . Advance to the slide titled “Simpson Achievements” and circle the sentence that reads “Has a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with the pen tool. You will not save the the annotation.

Play the slide show from the beginning. When you reach the Simpson Achievements slide right click on the canvas and choose Pointer Options > Pen.

While holding down your left mouse button draw a circle around the sentence as shown below:

Press the Esc key. You will then be prompted to Keep and Discard the ink annotation. For this activity you will Discard it, returning the slide to its original condition.

Self-Running Presentations

Self-running presentations are a great way to communicate information without having to have someone available to run a slide show presentation. For example, you might want to set up a presentation to run unattended in a booth or kiosk at a trade show or convention, or send a CD with a self-running slide show to a client.

Under Show type, click Browsed at a kiosk (full screen). NOTE If you set up a slide show to run at a kiosk, remember to also add automatic timings or navigation hyperlinks or action buttons. Otherwise, the slide show will show only the first slide.

Save Presentation as a Slide Show

Saving your PowerPoint presentation as a slide show ensures that when the file is opened, it automatically opens as a slide show (in full screen mode).

On the File menu, click Save As.

There are times when you may be sending someone a presentation to look at but they don’t have 2010. This save options would be to save it as a PowerPoint 97-2003.
